Elks No. 6 Sacramento California

Lodge History

Image of the Original Elks 6 Lodge

Our lodge records indicate that we were originally chartered in 1877, but the first past Exalted Ruler's picture hanging in our hall is dated 1895. Records have been found that confirm Sacramento's lodge was indeed founded in 1877. As we looked further, we discovered that approximately 2 years after we were chartered, the charter was rescinded due to what can be inferred to as prostitution. Our original lodge was located in the downtown area, so river
trade certainly had an influence. San Francisco, was granted the use our No. 6 and also No. 12 along with their original Lodge No. 3 thereby operating 3 lodges.
Two years after San Francisco took over No. 6 and No. 12, their charter was rescinded for, once again, prostitution, as well as gambling. Sacramento had no lodge until we were chartered as Lodge No.328 in 1895. Since that date, we have been in continuous operation. In 1908, at Grand Lodge Convention, we petitioned for and got our original No. 6 restored.
On June 18, 2010, we will celebrate our 115th anniversary.
Being the 6th lodge in all of Elkdom is something of which we are very proud.
